A Spring Clean for your Psyche: Reset your daily habits and lift your mood
As we enter Spring we notice the flowers unfurling their petals and the soft blanket of bluebells carpeting the forest floor. We notice all the magical events and it is sometimes hard not to take them for granted. But they don’t just happen. There is a series of events that take place: germination, growth of the stem and leaves, then the bud. Us humans also need a chain reaction to enable us to bloom.
The Science behind Spring cleaning your home and the effect on your mood
As human beings we are not dissimilar to the flower, we require just the right amount of input behind the scenes to shine. As the clocks go forward we have more sunlight and more of the body’s natural ‘feel good’ hormone serotonin. This natural phenomenon can have a knock on effect giving us the inclination to Spring clean and playing a significant role in boosting our mood.
“Over 80% of people in the UK say a clean and tidy home makes them feel more in control and less stressed.” - Report by Thane UK
The report also found that some even Spring clean their laptops and social circles. This type of ‘cleansing’ has been shown to reduce anxiety and overwhelm.
Using affirmation as mood boosters for the mind and body
A Spring clean for the psyche might include setting new intentions by way of affirmation. Decide what you want in life and go and get it! If this seems overwhelming, start with something small. Change the way you talk to yourself and speak your truth into existence!
I AM Brave
I AM Confident
I AM Decisive
I AM Organised
Us beautiful humans hold the power to reprogramme our own mind just by speaking the words. Have you heard of the saying ‘fake it till you make it?’ Your subconscious cannot tell the difference between a truth or a lie. Whatever you repeat in your mind or out loud will eventually become your truth.
Easy rituals for a positive impact on mental and physical health
Just like affirmations can become your truth, so can systems or rituals. Simple patterns of behaviour are our biggest predictors of success in our work, fitness and mental health. In the book The Slight Edge, Olson describes how some of the most successful people have achieved greatness by doing the mundane every damn day! We have adapted this simple routine for you:
-
Write down 3 things you're grateful for
-
Journal for 2 minutes
-
Meditate for a few minutes
-
Speak your affirmations (3-5 a day)
-
Exercise for 15 minutes
The ‘one a day’ method can also take the overwhelm out of decluttering. Remove one item from your home a day and donate to a friend or charity, it will help you stay on top of things.
Spring cleaning can have a significant effect on us emotionally and physically. A good old clear out can help us keep on top of the clutter in our home and can also sweep the cobwebs out of the crevices of our minds. For a significant reduction in anxiety and overwhelm, create your own simple ritual following the simple steps in this blog. My wish is that you set the intention to achieve whatever happiness looks like to you.
